But scientific interest and the care of animals do not always go hand in hand, and 1970 was certainly not a time of stringent ethics boards.Why this is still relevantThe benefit of all the weirdness: This mission paved the way for how NASA thinks about space motion sickness today, which plagues a vast majority of astronauts in their first few days off the planet. According to a 2025 study titled “Reducing motion sickness during simulated astronaut post-spaceflight water landings using anticipatory cues or postural control,” researchers ran a ground-based simulation, not an actual spaceflight, that put volunteers through a centrifuge-induced gravity transition followed by simulated ocean-wave motion, mimicking a capsule bobbing after splashdown. The study found that giving subjects anticipatory visual cues of their upcoming motion significantly reduced nausea-related symptoms and nearly tripled how long people could tolerate the simulated wave motion, while a second countermeasure, active postural control, showed no significant benefit over doing nothing.
