Following the phenomenal success of RRR, Ram Charan’s popularity soared, earning him widespread recognition across India and overseas.
However, the actor is yet to translate that visibility into sustained box-office success as a solo star beyond the Telugu market.
His post-RRR releases, Acharya and Game Changer, failed to make a major impact at the box office.
While Peddi turned out to be a big commercial success in the Telugu states, its performance in North India and North America remained underwhelming compared with the expectations surrounding a pan-Indian star.
The numbers reflect this reality. Even today, Rangasthalam (2018) remains Ram Charan’s highest-grossing solo film in North America, with around $3.51 million, while Peddi finished with approximately $3.47 million.
Despite its strong performance in the Telugu states, Peddi did not significantly expand Ram Charan’s market beyond the Telugu-speaking audience.
That makes his next project with Sukumar particularly important.
The filmmaker’s last outing, Pushpa 2, emerged as a nationwide phenomenon and also delivered exceptional overseas numbers, including a gross of around $15 million in North America.
With Sukumar at the helm once again, expectations are naturally high. For Ram Charan, the upcoming film is more than just another big-budget entertainer.
It represents an opportunity to strengthen his position as a genuine pan-Indian star by delivering a blockbuster that connects equally with audiences in the Telugu states, North India and overseas markets.
A truly nationwide success is now the next major milestone Ram Charan will be aiming to achieve.
